Jonathan Hobin’s exhibition, Little Lady/Little Man at the Ottawa City Hall Art Gallery.

The exhibition runs from May 16 to April 29, and is described as the following:

This photographic exhibition reflects on the death of a husband and wife through the use of lullaby, vintage photographs and life-size deathbed portraiture. Little Lady / Little Man not only acknowledges the dichotomy of life’s seemingly simultaneous endurance and fragility, but also challenges the viewer to consider concepts surrounding their own mortality.

What if it were all possible? Vote JDL for AMS Exec

I recently came across this great campaign video created on behalf of Team JDL that showcases aspects of their political platform in Queen’s University’s upcoming AMS elections (Alma Mater Society - undergraduate student government).

This kind of stop-motion production is a huge undertaking, which no doubt took many hours of editing and planning.  The video also presents an excellent virtual tour through the campus of my beloved Alma mater.  It’s great to see that the student political spirit is alive and well, and continuing to find creative ways of promoting itself.

I also loved the musical inclusion of Australian indie-folk artist Hudson’s, “Against The Grain”. Guitar tab

Best of luck to team JDL

Best of the web 2011
This video represents 85 painstaking hours of editing, and is Zapatou’s tribute to some of the year’s most popular viral videos to appear on Youtube. In it we see clips that are mesmerizing, breathtaking and just plain inspiring. More importantly it gives you an opportunity to reflect on the nature of the global community that works to capture, produce and share content on the internet for the enjoyment of others. To me the video represents a real collaborative achievement that although being mediated by technology, is still manifestly human in its essence.

While on the topic of web virality, I thought it would be appropriate to include my favourite image hosting site Imgur’s Best images of 2011 in this post for good measure.

If any of you are feeling a little too proud of humanity in terms of what we have been able to capture and share with others in one year, this twelve minute montage of the Best Fails of 2011(via TwisterNederland7) ought to even things about a bit.

Wishing the very best to all of you and yours in 2012!

I love seeing the kind of hard work and attention to detail that these Sheridan College students put into their filmmaking. This Media Arts Class of 2013 project manages to blend some of my favourite things into their live action remake of the intro to Disney’s Recess.

For one, I’ve always been a sucker for 90’s childhood nostalgia, especially of the Saturday morning cartoon variety.  I’m also inclined to always support Canadian student content on YouTube. Keep up the great work guys!

There’s just something about the MacGyver theme that mashes up so well with these scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy.

We Got Scared - An interesting look into into the social, technological and scientific development of the human condition throughout history. I felt it brought up many intriguing views on humanity’s current state in regards to scientific and rational inquiry. I’ll let the video speak for itself.

I never thought I would have been so captivated by the stories of the former host of Blues Clues, Steve Burns. I find his intelligibility to be inspiring. We get to see the human mind reflecting on questions of identity, conflict and temporality in this 17 minute monologue one-person show. The audience just eats up Steve’s storytelling method that can be both hilarious and moving.

I’ve really got to hand it to this guy for this brilliant piece of citizen journalism.  People like the ones caught blocking the emergency vehicle lane really deserve the public humiliation that comes with the sharing of independent media in the public sphere.

Selfish people thinking that the rules shouldn’t apply to them seems to be a major symptom of the problems England is facing with regard to the riots and looting across the country. I hope the licence plate numbers featured in the video lead to the eventual booking of each of these vehicles. To the cameraman, good on you for turning your frustration into a productive effort that hopefully sets an example for the future.
